Lacrosse equipment also varies according to individual playing positions as well as skill level. If you’re new to the game and planning on playing for the first time, this article can help you acquire basic knowledge about Lacrosse.

The history

Lacrosse is a fast-paced and exciting sport that has been played for centuries by Native Americans. In fact, it’s the oldest known sport in North America.

The game was originally called “baggataway” by the Native Americans who played it, which means “little brother of war.” The name has since changed to “lacrosse” or “La Crosse,” but the game itself hasn’t changed much over the years.

Today, lacrosse is played by more than six million people around the world—and many of those are women! Although most people associate lacrosse with men’s teams, women’s teams have been around since 1974, when Cornell University started one up. Today there are more than 150 college women’s programs!

Rules

The object of the sport is scoring more points (goals) than your opponent—a goal is scored when one team successfully passes the ball into their opponent’s net from behind either goal line (the red line in front of each goal).

The game can be played by two teams of 12 players each, or by four teams of six players each. In either case, there are two goalkeepers who defend their respective goals and a midfield line (a line consisting of three players on each team).

Each team has six offensive players and six defensive players on the field at any given time. Each team’s offense consists of a center player flanked by three attackmen (offensive midfielders), three midfielders (midfielders), three defensemen (defensive midfielders), and one goalie. Their defense consists of two short sticks (defensive midfielders), two long sticks (offense/defense), and one goalie.

In lacrosse, a player can only use their stick to pass or shoot the ball. If a player puts their stick down to stop it from going out of bounds, they must immediately pick up the ball or else they’ll be called for a delay of game penalty.

The field

A lacrosse field is shaped like an upside-down triangle with two 18-foot by 44-foot goals at each end. There are two 35-foot lines that run parallel along either side of the field; these are called “side lines.” There are also two 65-foot lines that run across both ends of the field; these are called “center lines.”

The equipment

Lacrosse equipment includes:

A lacrosse stick that is made up of a head and shaft. The head typically has a pocket where the ball can be placed so it doesn’t fall out when you are playing. The shaft is usually made from wood or aluminum, and it attaches to the head via a leather string known as a lacing system.

Gloves – Gloves protect your hands from cuts and abrasions while playing lacrosse. They can also help with gripping the lacrosse stick so you don’t drop it during playtime!

Mouth guard – This protects your teeth from getting knocked out during playtime, and also helps with keeping your breath fresh throughout an intense workout session!
