Lacrosse and Ice-Hockey – what connects these two sports?

It’s pretty rare for people to actually know about the sports colliding. Ice hockey and Lacrosse have a lot in common, but there will be some things you simply won’t see at first glance. I guess there is only one possible way, which is to look carefully at both sports and then later make an analysis of it: Ice Hockey is a sport played on ice, in which two teams of skaters use their sticks to shoot a vulcanized rubber disk into their opponent’s goal. Lacrosse was an important form of cultural expression among the Native peoples of North America prior to the arrival of Europeans. Seemingly, they have nothing in common. Wrong! Let’s see what connects them by diving deeper into both sports individually.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse is a fast-paced sport that’s played on an indoor or outdoor field. The object of the game is scoring goals by passing or shooting the ball into the opposing team’s goal. Players can only use their lacrosse stick, which is similar to a hockey stick, to pass and shoot the ball.

Each team consists of 10 players at any given time, and they’re split into two groups: offense and defense. On offense you have your attackmen, midfielders, and defensemen; on defense, there are two defenders and one goalie. Each player has a position in their group based on where they’re standing in relation to the goal when the ball is dropped for play.

The teams also wear different colored uniforms so it’s easy for fans (and umpires) to tell them apart!

Ice hockey

Ice hockey is a sport that involves two teams of six skaters each and a goalkeeper. The object of the game is to shoot the puck into the opposing team’s net to score points while preventing your opponents from doing the same.

The game is played on an ice rink (hence “ice”), with players using wooden sticks to pass, shoot and handle the puck. Ice hockey players wear special padded gear so they can skate around without getting injured by their opponents’ sticks or pucks.

The similarities

The similarities between ice hockey and lacrosse are numerous, but they boil down to a few key points. Both sports involve players on a field or court that compete against each other to score points, and both require strength, speed, and agility, even though ice hockey is played on ice with skates, and lacrosse is played with a stick on grass.

In both games, the goal is to score more points than your opponent by getting the ball into the opposing team’s net. Players can’t touch the ball with their hands; instead, they use sticks (and in ice hockey’s case, skates).

Both sports can be pretty brutal and injuries are not rare. Therefore all of the players have to wear protective gear at all times. Moreover, since both sports can be harsh, both hockey players and lacrosse players need to be strong as well as agile so that they can move through the field/rink and survive any blows or hits.
